Barnet

From Historic Fairs to Modern Living

Barnet is a vibrant and diverse borough located in the northern part of London, known for its rich history, green spaces, and excellent transport links. The area offers a blend of suburban charm and urban convenience, making it a popular place to live for families and professionals alike. Historically, it played an important role in London's development, with roots dating back to medieval times. One of the most notable events was the famous cattle market fair held twice a year in early April and September. During its peak in the 1880s, over 40,000 cows were bought and sold there, making it one of the largest of its kind in the country. The fair attracted not only traders but also travelers and visitors from across the capital, and eventually gave rise to the term Barnet in London’s rhyming slang as a playful reference to hair. Today, the borough is a thriving suburb with a mix of modern developments and historical landmarks. It boasts a variety of green spaces such as Trent Park and Hadley Wood, providing residents and visitors with ample opportunities for outdoor activities. The high street is filled with shops, cafes, and markets, offering a lively atmosphere, while the local museum offers a glimpse into its rich past. Barnet shares its borders with several other London boroughs, including Enfield to the east, Haringey and Camden to the southeast, Brent to the south, and Harrow to the southwest. To the north, it meets the county of Hertfordshire, marking the edge of Greater London.
