London Boroughs & Neighbourhoods Guide

Kensington: A Walk Through London's
Most Elegant Neighbourhood

Kensington is London at its most elegant — royal parks, red-brick streets and a famous concert hall.

Kensington is one of London's most elegant and charming neighbourhoods, known for its balance of history, culture and contemporary style. It is graced by Kensington Gardens, one of the city's most beautiful royal parks, which runs seamlessly into Hyde Park. Walking along its tree-lined avenues and admiring the Albert Memorial is an experience of rare beauty. Facing the gardens stands the Royal Albert Hall, one of the most famous concert venues in the world, which has hosted legends such as Eric Clapton, Adele, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.

A local's story: I worked in Kensington for four years, and these are the streets, parks and pubs I got to know. For the whole borough — where it is, travel zones, transport and where to stay — see our Kensington and Chelsea borough guide.

Red-Brick Streets and Famous Neighbours

The neighbourhood is also famous for its streets lined with elegant red-brick buildings that keep a timeless charm. Strolling through these quiet lanes, you may even come across a famous face: Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin's guitarist, has long lived at Tower House in Holland Park, and other rock stars have often been spotted in the area, moving around in total discretion.

Shopping: From High Street Kensington to King's Road

Kensington also offers top-level shopping. From Kensington High Street you can continue towards Knightsbridge, home to the historic Harrods department store, on a walk that sums up London luxury. It ends at Sloane Square, at the start of the King's Road, famous for its high-end boutiques — where spending a few thousand pounds with a simple tap of a card is considered perfectly normal.

If you are looking for something more eclectic and bohemian, a short distance away lies Portobello Road Market, one of London's most iconic street markets, in the same borough.

Kensington by Night

For those who want to extend their Kensington experience into the evening, the neighbourhood offers refined venues that reflect its spirit. The Churchill Arms is a historic, eye-catching pub famous for its flower-covered façade and cosy interior — and for the Thai restaurant tucked away at the back, a unique twist that goes perfectly with a pint in a quintessentially British setting. A short walk away, on Kensington Church Street, Piano Kensington is a chic piano bar known for live music, cocktails and an intimate atmosphere. And on Kensington High Street, the Goat Tavern is one of the area's oldest pubs, with a warm, traditional feel — ideal for classic British food and a relaxed drink.
